Welcome to Sunday... This home took a bit more than a few Sundays to complete. The concept came to our company as a working footprint outlining the structure of the home. The ultimate for us! Being able to readjust the window positions, plumbing adjust the wall length to accommodated the needed appliances and to polish how the kitchen is seen from the connecting spaces.
Paramount for our design and our clients, kitchens must be functional, appealing from all angles and appear as kitchen furniture rather than benchtops and cabinets, detail must remain interesting.
The structure of the home was built around two huge angled concrete slabs. You open the huge steel entrance door and your greeted with the feeling of space, this narrows at the point where the kitchen, living, dining space stops and the home filters through to the sleeping quarters.
We grew our kitchen design around the concrete angles. You will notice that the back wall (cleaning zone) is floating between the angling steel structure. The right hand side (storage zone, comprising of the fridge, two pantry and an open coffee nook) this narrows in depth all the way through to the left hand side where you will see the small storage solution on the left, this is only 350mm deep, this provides the strength of the angled detail and functions as a small office space. Charging phones and all those small objects that you need at hands reach in your kitchen, handbags, newsletters, first aid kits…
Notice the compressed 5mm stainless steel wrapping the cleaning zone, this is the only element in the back cabinetry that sit parallel with the exterior wall.
The open island is to host many elements of the kitchen. Cooking, preparing, entertaining an above all looking like furniture as it blends back into the home.
The thick timber bench allows family to linger whilst being cooked for, the softness of the timber is inviting for your arms to rest, your wine glass to sit on, and provides a line from the functioning kitchen to the relaxing side.
The benchtop has been formed out of our favorite benchtop material, Corian glacier white. Allowing a smooth seamless benchtop as the top increases in height from 920mm to 1050mm. The height was needed to suit the clients ergonomics, the height eases the task of chopping, see the raised side on the right, then we lower back to the 920mm around the hob area so pots are easy to see and stir.
The kitchen has a surprise colour, an intense blue which we have used to contrast the raw material elements in the home. By night the mesh in the kitchen is backlit transforming the kitchen into furniture as it finishes its cooking duties for the day

BRINGING STYLE TO THE STREETS OF WANAKA..
Spatial and Kitchen Renovation completed by the team at Melanie Craig LTD..
This home stands proud near Wanaka’s town center. The property is well established with gardens and view to the ever so stunning vista of Wanaka. The existing kitchen pokey, tired, cream and located in a spot where you needed to enjoy your own company as there was only space for one.
Welcome to the transformation…
The heart of the home THE KITCHEN (spatially design by MCD) now creates an open area of dinning, sun soak conversation spot and connects perfectly to a deck for outdoor dinning. The tall cabinetry of the kitchen narrows the walkway to the TV space, for those who love to watch TV and can do so without being interrupted by the dance of everyday living.
A dramatic materials and texture of deep green stained maple, toped off with Takapuna high jersey green, the flowing elegance of Corian and of course we all love to linger around honed black granite island. The kitchen wouldn’t be what it is without the intense lime steel, colour generates a natural ecstasy.
Get the kitchen right and life will flow around it.
