Bathrooms & laundries

Wet areas, ventilation, waterproofing and small-room layouts, with the Building Code kept in view.

Bathrooms and laundries are where design meets water, and water is patient. Most of the trouble in New Zealand wet areas comes from moisture that was never given a way out: steam with nowhere to go, a shower floor with too little fall, a membrane that stops short of where the splashes land.

These guides cover layout first, because a well-planned small room beats a badly planned large one, then the hidden layers behind the tiles and the ventilation that keeps mould at bay. Where the Building Code or consent rules apply, we link to the official source so you can check the current wording.
